Food is a hot topic on newsstands and bookshelves these days. And as one of our most basic needs, it should be. The ways in which food is grown, harvested, transported, processed, accessed, consumed, and disposed of have far reaching impacts on all of our lives.
Of course historically eating from one's geographical area was the norm. Reconnecting ourselves to where our food comes from, how it was produced, and who produced it is a big step in strengthening our livable localized food system.

Ravenous Readers Book Club.
Join us to read books about food and sustainability. Issues such as growing food locally, the impact of commercial agriculture, and growing communities will be explored. The first book is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Come join the discussion! We meet the first Thursday of every month at King's Books, where books are available for purchase. A project of Grow Local Tacoma. Part of Tacoma Reads Together.
Future books will be Cod by Mark Kurlansky (April 2), Plenty by Alisa Smith & J.B. MacKinnon (May 7), and In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan (June 4).

Find Your Community Garden
Are you ready to get dirty? Find your gloves. Pull out the shovel. Search for seeds. Get outside and enjoy the bounty of your efforts. There's never a bad time to start gardening!

Find Your Farmers Markets
Farmers markets are an easy way to fit local food shopping into your routine, especially if you're not sure you want to commit to a whole farm share or for when you realize you need a little extra of this or that in any particular week. Plus, they're a lot of fun.
